The Canadian national women’s curling championship, better known as the Scotties Tournament of Hearts, will kick off in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Unlike most years, this year’s tournament will have been overshadowed by this year’s Olympic Trials and a few upsets in provincial and territorial playdowns have left some big names and perennial participants out of this year’s event.

The Winnipeg Alliance made their home debut this weekend and their first home game in the Canadian Major Indoor Soccer League (CMISL) since the April 2007 showcase game at the MTS Centre. The Alliance played their prairie counterpart, the Saskatoon Aviators, in a two game series at the Garden City Community Centre Complex on January 7th and 8th.
